Rather than allow his and Bel’s and Nicol’s clone siblings to become slaves for Ryoval’s bordellos, Miles decided to sneak into Ryoval’s complex to perform the task in secret.

Ignore buiold the culture says – it lies. I have to admit that I find Bujold’s use of the pronoun “it” to describe Thorne quite difficult to take, but I suppose the novella was published in and the general understanding of gender and pronouns has moved on a long way in nearly 30 years.

He then searches the truck for weapons, their stunners being useless, but is unable to find anything. Miles seemed different, not nearly as witty, and just plain off his game.

The guards escort them out, obviously amused at these idiot hick mercenaries, taking all their loose cash and telling them their lucky to be leaving with all their limbs intact. It was fun labjrinth Jackson’s Hole, but it was even more fun to see Miles get a little monster side action. This one isn’t terribly comforting, though….
