He is used and abused, oppressed, but he also never gives in to defeat. How is it that he can push sanity through the screaming madness of the Ancestors in his head? Will is moving from one step to another, Dallin is more trying to understand the step in which he is already on. Better than the first time. Dallin is a rock. He’s on the run and carrying a heavy burden full of rage and agony. Fabulous world-building and characterizations make this a must read.
Now he is on the run, has been for three years already, when he is “involved” in a murder, but it’s not clear if he is just a witness or if he has a part in it. The language is at turns poignant and pointed — we yearn for Wil to see a river as much as Dallin yearns to show it to him, and somehow a river becomes a wider world much safer than any they’ve lived in so far.
Carole Cumming’s writing style was what pulled this whole book together. Even though the story takes place over just a few days, it has that epic feel that I love in a fantasy novel. Instead the reader only learns the truth as our two MC’s do which is very addictive. Some things come full circle and then new paths are set. Sep 13, Mandapanda rated it it was amazing Shelves: Brayden in particular kept surprising me — apparently I had some fantasy-character stereotypes in my head that I expected him to fall in line with, but he just kept refusing to conform to them.
Consider me another convert to Wil and Dallin. And for his mother to stop being disappointed in him.
This book is just the beginning of Wil and Dallin’s journey and I am starting the next book immediately. This is a book that everyone should pick up and read as soon as they can.

They’re meant as thank-you notes for the readers, bonus material, and nothing more. The way that Carole Cummings uses words and uni There are so many things that I enjoy in a fantasy book and this story covered them all for me. Most of these have not had the benefit. It is beautiful and I often found myself going back paragraphs just to read it again. I am in love with the setting, the mythology, the politics, and especially the characters.

Also, I have cadole tiny observation: The guys are on the run for the entirety of this book. There is no romance and no sex in this book and, for a self proclaimed perv, I am surprised to say that I didn’t miss it. I spent my Christmas weekend devouring this book, enjoying everything about the story, and wanting to get my aislin on books two and three of this trilogy well before the publisher will allow.
