Baradwaj Rangan manages to ask the right questions most of the times. A screenshot from Dil Se, one of Ratnam’s politically charged films. In short, like Mani Ratnam’s films, Conversations surprises, entertains and stimulates. I’d highly recommend this to anyone who’s a fan manii Mani Ratnam, or in general likes good Tamil films.

With Rangan’s conversationx and impassioned introduction setting the Tamil and national context of the films, and with posters, script pages and numerous stills, this book is a sumptuous treat for serious lovers of cinema as well as the casual moviegoer looking for a peek behind the process. There are two movies of his which are my personal favorites: Some of the questions were so juvenile.

I wonder if perhaps it could have been better formatted by shifting Mani Ratnam’s well-written note to the end as a sort of culmination. I found this careless answer to a weighty question a little incomplete.

While we were making a really so-called short film at college, it kind of struck me how difficult this process of filmmaking is, and how some directors have made filmmaking look so effortless and palatable.

And also one book that clarifies why you cannot reduce Mani Rathnam as just this upper class filmmaker who works with an upper class team to portray upper class living. Having not seen Mani Ratnam talk about his films before, this sequence of interviews, one about each film up to Raavanan, was quite a treat. Having lived through most of the Mani’s movies, this book brings back quite a bit of nostalgia. Instead we have a fanboy who is like a kid in a candy store asking questions which he always wanted to ask!

Now to spend one weekend watching all his movies one after the other. Still, BR often points out interesting connections within MR’s body of work that Ratnam himself appears not to have noticed.

The best parts of the book are when Mani Ratnam takes the conversation forward when describing how some portions of his movies are derived from his own experiences, like the daughter’s signing by the bedside in Guru, and what lead to Bombay and the struggles he faced to release the film.

We are told why he decided to make movies that told controversial stories, a Hindu-Muslim couple caught in religious riots in Bombay, a love-triangle involving a mature separated woman in Pallavi Anu Pallavithe doomed relationship of an obsessed lover and a terrorist in Dil Se Amazon Advertising Find, attract, and engage customers. A book to be read by all Ratnam’s fan.
