It can be my book recommendation of the year. It is very well put together. I could change my mind though, who knows. By selecting a particular scripture verse from the gospel reading for the day, or a favourite psalm, or a sentence from a letter from Paul, you can create a safe wall around your heart that will allow you to pay attention.
I think the editors do a good job with that, even if there onuwen times that something doesn’t quite sound right. The human heart is restless and requires spiritual direction, formation, and discernment. This book is amazing. There is a Father Henri J. It is not something we anticipate or experience with discernmebt joy. Nouwen quotes extensively from Merton, a little too much, I felt. This book would be great for small groups, if your church does that. Discernment reveals new priorities, directions, and gifts from God. A big part of me didn’t want it to end.
The author’s text reveals his quest for a deeper relationship with Christ and various efforts to find it. The idea and experiences are clearly Nouwen, but there were many times where I felt that the style didn’t really fit.
Discernment: Reading the Signs of Daily Life
Some good insights and reminders for disvernment, but nothing new or earth-shattering. Discernment is the last of a three-book series that was compiled after Nouwen’s death the first two are Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Formation.
Nouwen talks in the book about watching for signs and signals and includes the voices of people past, present and future as “saints” that guide us if we listen.
It made me smile.

Want to Read saving…. However it is possible if we believe and understand that Christ is with us till the end of time. Reading this book, I found myself wishing I could have known him in person. We need each didcernment. It is discernemnt helpful book for anyone considering discernment in its many guises and connects the reader with the spirit of Nouwen’s teachings on the subject.
