There are very good discussions of the basic and well-known fundamental theories and models, but the authors also share with us what tends to happen in the real world. It’s a great reference for advanced corporate finance but it’s a little difficult to understand. Rather than organizing the text around financial theory and then thinking about potential applications, the authors began by thinking about finance practice, and then organized the book around the tools needed to create value in the financial management of a corporation.
Rather, it’s an overview book that attempts to describe the full weight of modern understanding of asset pricing and corporate finance to an ambitious masters student. It is a corporate book, yet it is cutting edge investment theory, presenting the forefront on interpreting what the data says about the theories, cutting edge on risk management, capital budgeting, and on the issues that need to be considered to determine both a firm’s proper mix of debt and equity financing and its value maximizing dividend policy.
This was one of the supplemental marketd texts required during my MBA course and is by far one of the most complete and practice oriented texts in the subject. Where the book starts shining, is in the 2nd part where one see’s an excellent treatment of Portfolio Management moving into CAPM and then onward to Multi-factor models and Arbitrage Pricing Theory.

The title is somewhat misleading, rginblatt some people seem to think it’s supposed to be about “strategy,” which it is, but only from a corporate finance perspective.
There were high hopes when this book was released as an attempt to heighten the level of discourse at MBA programs, but instructors quickly found out that most MBA students simply wouldn’t put up with the “deep-dive” difficulty of the material. It took almost 10 years to complete this effort, because they did not want to write an ordinary textbook.
