Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko-ho is the first set of kata and consists of 9 waza using the bokken. Kendo or “way of the sword”, is the martial art of Japanese fencing. One of the reasons as to why trainees, especially children, refrain from practicising Kata is because of its predictable nature. Some say, “execute a good seme with kigurai before you strike”. Learning to build and use pressure, channeling spiritual energy and developing a spirit of kinship are some of the motives that Nihon Kata inculcates in its practitioners and hence is a valuable aspect of training.

Importance of Kata in Kendo

This also can be learned through shinai kendo but it is a lot easier for most of us to see what is going on when wearing no bogu armour. Uchitachi is a role of a higher grade people since it is a ” teaching” position. Also we all katxs what and how our partner will strike us and what and how we counterattack them.


Here is what happens Uchitachi takes hidari-jodan and shitachi takes migi-jodan. It may not be as exciting as shinai kendo because kata does not involve active movements like shinai kendo.

Both uchitachi and shitachi take chudan. Kxtas example, we do not use a kodachi in kendo unless we have two swords. Uchitachi should not lower the body as cutting down. There are only two cuts involved in this kata but this shows what exactly kendo is about. Maybe because kata does not seem very practical to many people for shinai kendo, many people see kata as something they have to do for their promotion exam grading.

kwndo I will introduce the benefits of kata. In this Kata, the first seven out of ten steps entail using bokken by both the teacher and the student while the last three call for using the tachi on behalf of the teacher and kodachi, meaning a short bokken, on part of the student.
