A very, very good book that could have been a gem if not for that element. Schmidt not only has a remarkable way with words, but his characters almost seem to leap from his book because they are so real. You know, more of that gray stuff. This lovely, heartbreaking, and very real story doesn’t always go where you think it will, but in the end it goes to a movingly spiritual place.
